Barcelona has made history once again.
On October 30th, 2025, the Basílica de la Sagrada Família reached 162.91 meters in height, surpassing Ulm Cathedral in Germany and officially becoming the tallest church in the world.
A milestone that fills locals with pride and adds yet another reason to visit one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

A Record That Reaches the Sky
This achievement was made possible with the installation of the upper section of the Tower of Jesus Christ, the highest point of the basilica.
With this final structure in place, the Sagrada Família reached 162.91 meters, surpassing Ulm Cathedral (161.53 m), which had held the record since 1890.
And the work isn’t finished yet.
Once the final cross is placed at the top of the tower, the basilica will reach 172.5 meters, making it not only the tallest church on the planet, but also one of the most impressive religious structures ever built.
“It is a historic moment — the result of more than 140 years of work and Gaudí’s extraordinary vision,” stated the Sagrada Família Foundation.
A Living Project That Keeps Growing
Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882, and today it continues to move forward while staying true to Gaudí’s original spirit.
Each year, new towers, sculptures, and architectural details bring the temple closer to its final form, expected in 2034.
The new central tower represents Jesus Christ and is surrounded by four towers dedicated to the evangelists, all completed in 2024.
This progress marks not only a monumental structural milestone, but the closing of a key chapter in its long history.
